17th May celebration
Weather reports threatening
rain lowered the attendance at this year's celebration of
Norwegian Constitution Day (17 Mai) at Nansenfield
on Sunday, 21 May. But the rain stayed away and the annual
event was good fun for the more than three hundred
participants. Speeches by Norwegian Consul General in San Francisco, Are-Jostein
Norheim, and LA County Sheriff, Lee Baca, were
well-received, and the crowd especially appreciated the San Pedro High School Marching Band's
rendition of "Norge i Rødt, Hvitt og Blått."
Sales at the food stalls
went better than last year, in spite of the lower attendance
numbers. Norwegian soft drink "Solo" was a
particular crowd favorite, along with the freshly cooked
waffles that create long lines in front of the stall every
year. This year's line was said to be 30 minutes, prompting
some to opt for a hamburger or bratwurst instead.
The only heartbreak of the
day was home team Fram Masters' loss to PV Alumni in the "Oldham" Cup Finals
on penalties.
